  • Formula 1 headed to Mexico City for round 20 of the 2023 season
  • Sergio Perez had himself a race to forget
  • Fans have wasted little time to react to the unfortunate crash of the Mexican driver

The Mexican Grand Prix kicked off with a burst of excitement and drama. Max Verstappen gave Red Bull plenty to celebrate as he surged into the lead even before the first turn. However, the same couldn't be said for his teammate Sergio Perez, who was competing in his home Grand Prix.

In an attempt to secure a Red Bull one-two at the start, the 33-year-old Mexican took an aggressive approach to overtake Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. Unfortunately, Perez's aggressive move led to contact with Leclerc's car, damaging Perez's right rear tire as he approached the first turn of the Autodrome Hermanos Rodriguez circuit.

As reported by Planet F1, Perez immediately made his way to the pits to assess and repair the damage, hoping to rejoin the race. However, it was soon evident that his car had sustained significant damage to the floor and rear end.

Fox Sports also noted that Perez, upon realizing that he had to retire from his home race due to the extensive damage suffered, was almost reduced to tears.

This unfortunate turn of events, combined with Perez's recent string of poor results, evoked a wide range of reactions from fans. Many took to social media to share their thoughts on the situation.

Fans react to Perez's crash

@Mobile_Junkee reacted with a prolonged:

"Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo."

@ekuruma_ expressed:

"What a disappointment! Lap 1 exits can be heart-wrenching. But let's hope Checo bounces back strong and makes up for."

@raymonlayman reflected on what could have been, noting Perez's audacious drive and the near-successful attempt to overtake Leclerc:

"He almost pulled it off. Moved over and Charles ever so slightly."

@Arshman95 commented on Red Bulls' start:

"Mega Max start, disaster for Checo."

@Frankiex24, visibly displeased, expressed frustration with Perez's recurring issues and suggested bringing in another driver.

"That's it bro get this guy off the team🤦🏽‍♂️ every week, it's something new with this guy. Just bring Danny Ricciardo in."

The crash for Perez further compounds his long haul of underwhelming results since his second-place finish at the Miami Grand Prix.

Perez opens up on mental struggle

In a previous report, Sports Brief stated that Red Bull's Sergio Perez opened up on his mental struggle through the 2023 Formula 1 season.

The Mexican driver has struggled for form and opted to seek the help of a therapist to regain his early season form.

Perez's poor run of form has put his immediate future at the Milton-Keynes team in doubt.
