- The three-time Formula 1 champion set a new record with his victory at COTA
Max Verstappen claimed victory at the United States Grand Prix Sprint after seeing off early challenges from Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
The world champion started the race on pole ahead of Leclerc; however, the start of the race appeared a little feisty as Verstappen had to fend off an early challenge from the Monagasque driver.
The Dutch driver nonetheless coasted to a relatively smooth victory after fending off the challenge of the Ferrari driver, who would subsequently lose his P2 position to Hamilton. Verstappen's victory in the US GP Sprint marked a historic moment in Formula 1.
Verstappen sets new F1 record
The 26-year-old driver, who had previously clinched Sprint race victories at the Australian and Belgian Grand Prix, added another record to his impressive season.
The victory on the night ensured Verstappen became the first F1 driver to record three Sprint race wins in a Formula 1 season, according to reports from Sky Sports.
The Red Bull driver teammate Sergio Perez, who had a relatively decent race given his streak of underwhelming performance, could only finish fifth behind Lando Norris, who had his sight set on the final podium slot, albeit missed out by 0.876 seconds.
Previous Sprint race winner Oscar Piastri had himself a race to forget as his overheated tires saw him plummet uncontrollably down the grid. The Australian driver would eventually finish 10th, outside the points on the night.
Verstappen will hope to replicate his smooth drive tomorrow when they take to the grid for the main event of the weekend — the US GP race.

Verstappen hits out at Hamilton
Sports Brief also reported that the animosity between Hamilton and Max Verstappen, which stems from the 2021 Formula season, keeps growing following the Mercedes driver's recent comments on his Red Bull rival.
Hamilton had initially cast doubts over the achievements and records of the Dutch driver in an interview ahead of the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.
Verstappen has now responded to the claim of the seven-time champion in the cheekiest of manners.
