As reported by the Marca, Verstappen’s latest championship achievement has placed him in the illustrious company of Formula 1’s most distinguished drivers, a group that includes legends like Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Ayrton Senna, and several others who have left an indelible mark on the sport.

In light of Max Verstappen’s recent milestone, Sports Brief takes a closer look at the most decorated Formula 1 drivers of all time:

Michael Schumacher & Lewis Hamilton - Seven Championships

Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton are widely regarded as the greatest drivers to ever grace the Formula 1 stage. Despite competing in different eras, comparisons between these two legends often result in spirited debates. Schumacher secured his seven drivers’ championships between 1994 and 2004, while Hamilton claimed his titles between 2008 and 2020, as reported by Motorsportsticket.com.

Juan Manuel Fangio - Five Championships

Argentine driver, Juan Manuel Fangio set the early standards in Formula 1. Fangio clinched an impressive five titles during the sport’s inaugural seven seasons, from 1951 to 1957.

For many years, he was considered the greatest F1 driver until Michael Schumacher surpassed his achievements in 2003.

Alain Prost & Sebastian Vettel - Four Championships

McLaren’s Alain Prost and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel also earned their places on Formula 1’s most decorated drivers list.

Prost’s championship victories, though occasionally controversial, occurred between 1985 and 1993. Vettel’s remarkable feat saw him lead Red Bull Racing to a period of dominance in the sport, securing four consecutive drivers’ titles between 2010 and 2014.

Senna, Piquet, Stewart, Lauda, Brabham, Verstappen - Three Championships

The list of drivers stuck on three drivers’ championship appear a little lengthy, but is no less iconic.

Brazilian great, Ayrton Senna clinched three titles with McLaren between 1988 and 1991.

British driver Sir Jackie Stewart, popularly regarded as the ‘Flying Scot’, clinched his three championships between 1969 and 1973.

Brazilian driver Nelson Piquet - who happens to be the father of Verstappen’s partner Kelly - also won his three titles between 1981 and 1987.

Austrian Niki Lauda remains the only driver to win a championship for both McLaren and Ferrari, and clinched his three titles between 1975 and 1984.

Jack Brabham became the first Australian driver to clinch an F1 drivers’ championship, and did so between 1959 and 1966.

Max Verstappen joins this elite list after clinching his third consecutive title at the Qatar Grand Prix Sprint race.

McLaren’s CEO discusses Verstappen’s dominance

In a previous article, Sports Brief reported on Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, discussing Red Bull’s dominance of the sport by Max Verstappen.

The 55-year-old did not hold back his displeasure with the effectiveness of the Milton Keynes team but believes the other teams can still catch up.

Brown has seen his McLaren team rise through the ranks to become one of the teams to beat this season and wants to match the pace of the RB19.
