- Hamilton has opened up about his retirement plan from the sport
Lewis Hamilton's immediate future was one of the major stories that surrounded Formula 1 until the British driver put pen to paper at the Italian Grand Prix.
The 38-year-old driver signed a two-year extension at the German constructor, and is expected to continue with the Brackley-based team until he turns 40.
Although scepticism abounds regarding whether this will indeed be the seven-time champion's final contract in Formula 1, the driver himself had hinted otherwise back in October 2022, as reported by Planet F1, when he mentioned that he envisions having five more years of racing ahead of him.
Hamilton has candidly shared his post-retirement plans, and it's worth noting that he had playfully teased Sebastian Vettel in the past when the German driver retired, suggesting that successful drivers who depart Formula 1 tend to return eventually. A recent case in point was Fernando Alonso.
In a recent interview with the German outlet Blick, the Mercedes driver delved into his thoughts and plans regarding retirement.
Hamilton on F1 retirement plan
The driver appeared to have a firm idea of what his retirement will look like. He noted that a comeback to the sport wouldn't be among his plans.
"That won't happen to me," the seven-time world champion said in his interview.
"When the chapter ends, that's when it ends.
"I can't imagine standing in the paddock or in the garage without getting into a car."
Hamilton further touched on his chances of winning an eighth drivers' championship that would ensure he becomes the sport's most successful driver.
"I never said the eighth title would be a stopping sign for me, but I'll only know when I get there," he added.
"You can hardly achieve the big goals in Formula 1 without a great car. Nobody can."

FootballHamilton has an outside chance of clinching P2 on the 2023 final grid standings, and will be shifting his focus to this weekend's race at the Lusial International Circuit in preparation for the Qatar Grand Prix.
Verstappen hits out at Hamilton
Sports Brief also reported that the animosity between Hamilton and Max Verstappen, which stems from the 2021 Formula season, keeps growing following the Mercedes driver’s recent comments on his Red Bull rival.
Hamilton had initially cast doubts over the achievements and records of the Dutch driver in an interview ahead of the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.
Verstappen has now responded to the claim of the seven-time champion in the cheekiest of manners.
