FootballFormula 1: Former Ferrari Boss to Take Over at Alpine Racing, Reports
- Alpine Racing are currently on the lookout for a team principal
- The French Formula 1 team recently parted ways with Otmar Szafnauer
- The team has been linked with this former Ferrari chief
Ahead of the second half of the 2023 Formula 1 season, which is set to resume at the tail end of August in Zaandvort, French team Alpine are in a race against time to appoint a new team principal.
Alpine Racing shocked the world of Formula 1 after announcing the departure of team boss Otmar Szafnauer only 33 races into his tenure as their Principal.
Szafnauer was visibly angered by the decision of his early dismissal and did not hold back his displeasure.
With Formula 1 fully into its midseason break, now appears the best time to appoint a new team principal.
Several names have been linked with the vacant role at the team, which is currently ranked sixth on the grid. However, one name stands out prominently among them – that of the former Ferrari team principal, Mattia Binotto, who seems to have captured the attention of many observers.
Alpine to appoint Binotto?
Reports from French media L’Auto Journal claim the Italian F1 chief Binotto was at the Belgian Grand Prix weekend and stayed for the post-race Pirelli tyre test.
The report further states that he has already agreed to terms to join the Alpine team hierarchy, following conversations with Renault CEO, Luca de Meo.
Planet F1 reports that Binotto departed Ferrari at the end of 2022 after the Scuderia fell away from Red Bull in the title fight. Despite having a car that was at least on par with the RB18 in the initial stages of the season, Ferrari's performance waned. Subsequently, the 53-year-old handed in his resignation at the conclusion of the season.
Szafnauer displeased with Alpine sack
In a previous report, Sports Brief stated that Alpine F1 team boss, Otmar Szafnauer has been dismissed only 33 races into his tenure as the French Formula 1 team Principal.
