  • The 2023 Formula 1 season continued at the Hungaroring last weekend
  • Formula 1 chiefs made a few changes to the race order prior to the Grand Prix
  • Lewis Hamilton has come out to criticise the changes

Lewis Hamilton has not held back his dissatisfaction with the new qualifying format and tyre rules that were trialled at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Irrespective of the Mercedes driver securing pole position, his first since Saudi Arabia 2021, he made clear his stance on the new qualifying format.

F1 Hungarian Grand Prix changes

Prior to the Grand Prix in Hungary, drivers were entitled to have 13 sets of tyres to use over the course of a Formula 1 race weekend.

Surprisingly, at Budapest, each driver only had 11 tyres at their disposal, forcing teams to use their allocations more wisely.

As reported by Sky Sports, there was also a surprising change to the qualifying format which meant teams were forced to use certain types of tyres in different sessions of qualifying.

In Q1, all 20 drivers were required to use the harder compound. In Q2, drivers were required to use the medium compound, and the final 10 that made it to Q3 were required to use the soft compound tyres for the final qualification.

As per reports from Formula 1.com, the driving force behind this change is the sport's push to be a more sustainable and carbon-neutral sport.

By reducing the number of freight a team has to incur, Formula 1 are hoping they can move closer to their 2030 carbon-neutral target.

Hamilton on Formula 1 change

Hamilton made it clear that he does not feel this is the answer as teams are forced to run less in practice.

As quoted by Sports Rush, Hamilton said:

"I only had [a single set of] tyres for the session, so not really a great format this change they made for this weekend.
"[It] just means we get less running. Not ideal. There's a lot of wet tyres that I think they throw away after every weekend – a lot.
"Maybe they should look at something like that, rather than taking time and lap time away or time on track away from the fans."

Hamilton’s displeasure appeared an echo of what his rival at Red Bull, Max Verstappen had said during the race weekend.

It remains to be seen if the FIA will revert to their old tyre management system or will fully imbibe this new rule.

Hamilton advised against joining Ferrari

In a previous report, Sports Brief stated that British Formula 1 driver, Lewis Hamilton has been warned against making a possible switch to Italian Formula 1 constructor Ferrari.

According to Formula 1 analyst, Peter Windsor, a move to the Maranello would plunge the driver’s career into chaos.

Hamilton’s future at Mercedes has been up in the air with rumours that the driver is unhappy, as reported by Sports Illustrated.

With just five months left to go on his existing deal, many teams on the grid have been linked with the seven-time champion.
