Charles Leclerc held off Sergio Perez to finish in P2 in the Formula 1 2022 season after a resilient display at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi.

The two drivers were each tied at 290 points going into the final race of the season and whoever came out on top was guaranteed P2 just behind Max Verstappen, who had wrapped up the title weeks ago.

Verstappen won at Abu Dhabi to complete a dominant season that has now seen him set a new record of 15 wins in a single season. Leclerc finished behind him to take his total tally for the season to 308, three more than Perez.

Verstappen's decision to deny his Red Bull teammate passage at the Brazil GP last weekend has now come back to haunt them as Red Bull failed to record a first-ever 1-2 finish in the driver's championships.

It was a race marked by extreme lows as seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire with less than four laps to go. His Mercedes teammate George Rusell had earlier been awarded a five-second penalty for almost causing a collision with Lando Norris as they exited a pit stop

Those misfortunes saw Mercedes miss out on P2 in the constructor's championships after Ferrari beat finished behind Red Bull.

Sebastian Vettel retires from F1

Sports Brief has also reported that the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix brought an end to the 2022 Formula 1 season and saw Germany’s Sebastian Vettel race for the final time in F1.

The Aston Martin driver announced that he would be retiring from the sport at the end of the season.

Vettel is one of the most popular drivers in the sport and will also go down as one of the more successful drivers.
