Huge Boost for South Africa With Cape Town Set to Host Formula E Race in February 2023

• This time, the Mother City has been pencilled in as the venue of a Formula E race in February next year
• The last large-scale race of this type to be held in South Africa was the A1 Grand Prix event at Kyalami in 2009

Motorsport enthusiasts in South Africa can clear their calendars: Formula E is coming to Cape Town in 2023.

The organisation revealed on social media that a leg of the series will take place in the precinct of the Cape Town Stadium on 25 February.

Formula E said in a Twitter post:

"Our race location for Round 5 of the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship... Set to be one of the fastest tracks on the calendar, we can’t wait to race on the streets of Cape Town! ⚡"

Iain Banner, chairman of race promoters at e-Movement said:

"We are extremely excited after three years of hard work to see the confirmation that Cape Town is on the season nine Formula E calendar for 25 February. It's something which we've been working hard towards."

"Predicted to be one of the fastest, if the not the fastest, circuit on the Formula E calendar, so it's all to play for Cape Town and South Africa. The race is our celebration at the end of our go Go Green Africa campaign, which will run annually as a means of pushing corporates and individuals to becoming green in the way that they conduct their lives."

The last time the country hosted a motoring event of this magnitude was the now-defunct A1 Grand Prix at Kyalami in 2009, as reported by Cape Town Magazine.

Government supported F1 Grand Prix return to South Africa but was not aware of financial guarantees

The South African government was keen to host a Formula One Grand Prix race in 2023. However, this went up in smoke after talks collapsed in September, as reported by Sports Brief.

A statement from the Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture read:

"The Department has not conducted any research and/or work with any Departments nor the private sector to measure the interest and identify the economic impact, especially market branding for the Republic."

The country last hosted an F1 race back in 1993, which was held at the Kyalami Race Circuit. On that occasion, Alain Prost won the race driving for Williams-Renault.
