FootballProteas Batsman Quinton De Kock Becomes First to 500 Runs at the 2023 Cricket World Cup
- Proteas opening batsman, Quinton de Kock has hit his fourth century of the Cricket World Cup
- De Kock has now tied AB de Villiers' South African record of four Cricket World Cup centuries
- Rassie van der Dussen also scored his second one-hundred of the tournament against New Zealand
With the clock ticking, one man is swinging like a man possessed.
Quinton de Kock notched up another century as the Proteas posted another 300-plus total when they batted first against New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup.
De Kock scored 114 off 116 balls to become the first batsman to breach the 500-run mark at the 2023 edition.
Quinny now has 545 runs, 128 short of Sachin Tendulkar's record, which was set in 2003. Tendulkar took 11 innings to reach that mark, while De Kock has batted seven times, with two more in the round-robin phase to play.
Reflecting on a slow start, De Kock told Ramiz Raja:
"I think they bowled really well up front. I felt a bit scratchy, I felt like I couldn't find my rhythm. I got a couple of messages from the guys on the bench saying 'just bat through, make sure of it' and that's what got me there."
The 30-year-old will be retiring from 50-over cricket at the end of this tournament, with Raja asking if had any second thoughts. De Kock replied:
"I'm trying not to give my wicket away as much as I can. I don't know what it is, I just want to keep batting. Obviously, my career is coming to a finish so Proteas."
De Kock becomes the third batsman to score four or more centuries in a single World Cup tournament. Kumar Sangakarra scored four in 2015 and Rohit Sharma scored five in 2019.
