The veteran wicketkeeper began his early career playing for Tamil Nadu's under-14 in 1999. Then, he rose through the ranks playing for the under-16 and under-19 sides. In 2002, he made his senior team debut for Tamil Nadu against Baroda. He was also selected in the Indian under-19 World Cup squad in 2004.

While with the under-19 side, DK got selected for the Indian national team. He replaced the injured wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel during the team's tour of England. Dinesh made his ODI debut for India on 5 September 2004 at Lord's ground. He performed well despite scoring just one run.
