Tyson Fury avoided a colossal upset on Saturday, October 28, albeit through controversial circumstances, as he defeated Francis Ngonnou by split decision.
Ngannou showed impressive grit despite his inexperience against the undefeated ‘Gypsy King’, whose split decision win at Boulevard Hall in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia angered thousands of sports fans worldwide.
Fury was given the upper hand over Ngannou in most rounds, including those where the Cameroonian seemingly dominated. He emerged with the victory with 96-93 and 95-94 on two of the judges' cards, while the other judge gave Ngannou 95-94.
Despite coming into the fight with little expectation, Ngannou, a UFC fighter, dominated fury with some impressive technique and punch power, as reported on Essentially Sport.
In the third round, fans across the world had bated breaths after Ngannou completely overwhelmed Fury with an unstoppable left hook that left Fury crumpled on the canvas. The Gypsy King was genuinely trouble at this point.
Unfortunately, it was not meant to be for Ngannou as the judges’ scorecards were announced in favour of Fury as a split decision was declared.
Fury may have been declared the winner, but from a moral standpoint, many fans, including some notable celebrities, felt Ngannou had emerged victorious.
Full punch stats
Compubox also released the full punch stats, which give further perspective on how the Fury-Ngannou bout went.
According to the stats, Fury was outclassed by total power punches to a deficit of 37-32.
Ngannou’s third round masterclass was also thought to be the turning point of the fight for the simple fact that he completely dominated Fury. In the final two periods, however, the UFC star seemed to lose his way as he only delivered six out of his 38 punches. This, in many aspects, was where the fight was won.
