  • Saul Canelo Alvarez holds the IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring Super Middleweight titles

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez will look to defend his Super Middleweight titles in a big-money fight against John Ryder.

Canelo, who is the IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring Super Middleweight champion, will naturally take home a bigger share of the purse.

As noted by Marca, Alvarez is expected to earn an estimated $40 million, while Ryder is expected to take home around $2.5 million.

The disparity between the prize purses may seem strange to many, but Canelo comes into the bout as the prizefighter. The Mexican is the defending champion and one of boxing's most must-see fighters

With a record of 56 wins, one loss and two draws, Canelo is arguably one of the greatest Middleweights of all time. Alvarez has won numerous world titles in multiple weight classes and has been ranked as the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world as well.

Ryder isn't a rookie

Britain's Ryder, on the other hand, has just 29 wins, five losses, and zero draws. He is the WBO's Interim Super Middleweight champion and shouldn't be considered a pushover.

Canelo returns home

Alvarez promises to be his biggest challenge yet, especially considering the fight will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, Canelo's hometown.

The fight has been billed as 'The King is coming home,' BBC reported.

"It's an honour. I'm happy to be part of this history in my own town," Alvarez said as he talked up his first fight in Mexico since 2011.

The publication noted how Canelo was bullied as a teenager for having red hair and freckles, but will return as a world champion. For his fight against Ryder, more than 50 000 will attend his homecoming, which will also take place over Mexico's Cinco De Mayo celebration weekend.

Canelo Alvarez gets Rocky-like statue

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is one of Mexico’s greatest boxers, and he will now forever be immortalised in his hometown of Juanacatlan in Mexico.

The Super Middleweight champion was honoured by his hometown, as they erected a giant statue of him on the boardwalk of the municipality of Jalisco.

Alvarez took to his Instagram to show off the statue and thanked the government of Juanacatlan for the honour, Sports Brief reported.
