Hugo Santillan: 23-year-old boxer collapses in ring and dies after fight

The boxing world has been dealt another tragedy after 23-year-old Hugo Santillan died on Thursday, July 25, after collapsing in the ring after his fight in Argentina over the weekend.

Santillan fought Eduardo Javier Abreu for the WBC Latino Silver Lightweight title that ended in a draw in Buenos Aires, on Saturday, July 20.

The super lightweight succumbed to his injuries days after Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev also died in hospital from injuries sustained in a fight on Friday, July 19.

According to TMZ, Santillan collapsed in the ring as the announcer presented the results after 10 violent rounds of all out boxing.

"Rest in Peace, Hugo Santillan. He passed away from injuries suffered during Saturday's fight which ended in a draw," the World Boxing Council tweeted.

After being stretchered off from the ring, Santillan was rushed to the closest hospital to undergo emergency surgery for a clot in his brain.

"Upon admission to the hospital, he has successive kidney failure and he did not come out of his coma,
"He had swelling of his brain and he never recovered consciousness. The swelling continued to worsen and it affected the rest of the functioning of his organs," the doctor said.

TUKO.co.ke previously reported that Dadashev died in a US hospital following his fight with Puerto Rico's Subriel Matias at MGM National Harbor on Friday, July 19, in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

The 28-year-old and Matias were in action during the junior welterweight IBF World Title Elimination fight for the chance to challenge Josh Taylor for his title belt.

Dadashev had to be helped out of the ring where he started to vomit and lost consciousness.

The Russian boxer underwent emergency brain surgery for a subdural hematoma (bleeding in the brain) at the UM Prince George's hospital center in Cheverly.
