Kevin Lerena became the new WBA Intercontinental heavyweight champion on Saturday night at Emperor's Palace.
Lerena defeated Romanian bruiser Bogdan Dinu in front of a sold-out partisan crowd. In the process, he clinched the country's first heavyweight title since the late Corrie Sanders' upset win over Wladimir Klitschko for the WBO Heavyweight Championship in March 2003.
South Africans, particularly rapper Cassper Nyovest, were thrilled for Lerena. Nyovest was recently involved in a celebrity bout against critic Slik Talk, an event which was seen as helping renew interest in a sport that had been on the wane for the longest time.
Nyovest was also in attendance as one of Lerena's special guests.
