Former IBF Lightweight champion Richard Oblitey Commey has thrown his support for Vasiliy Lomachenko as his country fights back the invasion by neighbours Russia.
Ukraine, in the past few weeks, has been enduring difficult times following Russia's invasion as a united sporting front continue to protest the actions of Russia.
Many sports icons of Ukrainian descent have since joined the army to defend their nation with Lomachenko following suit.
In a post on social media, the two-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist was pictured in full army regalia and a rifle across his shoulder.
Sharing his opinion on Lomachenko taking up arms to defend his nation, Commey was in full support of his former opponent.
“Right from the beginning of his career fighting in the amateurs he has been fighting for his country,” Commey told BBC Sport Africa.
“The country has given him the platform to become who he is and the people love him in Ukraine. So, with what happened if he neglected them that’s a decision that would have always haunted him. For him to decide to go back to the country and fight with them I think it’s the right decision.”
Lomachenko and Commey's relationship
Richard Commey and Vasiliy Lomachenko hold a water-tight friendship that transcends beyond the boxing ring.
The two boxers who fought in December 2021 have a great deal of respect for each other.

Klitschko brothers take up arms to defend Ukraine against Russian invasion
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that a former world heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko has declared that he is ready to take up arms alongside his brother Wladimir as Russia invades their home country Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had declared a "specialised military operation" in Ukraine's Donbas region and warned the international community not to interfere.
