  • The penultimate bout of the evening was a special one at ESPN Africa Boxing as the new African Boxing Union Female Flyweight was crowned
  • Simangele Hadebe and Halima Vunjabei were fortunate enough to lock horns for the vacant title in Johannesburg
  • After six very entertaining rounds, the crowd was given something to celebrate as homegirl Hadebe won via unanimous by the judges

Hadebe took advantage of her height, keeping the enthusiastic Vunjabei at bay throughout the fight. The latter's eye started swelling as the second round began, and would hinder her for the remainder of the fight.

Admirably, however, Vunjabei took the fight the whole distance. The decision was met with jubilation by the partisan crowd in what was a great advert for women's boxing.

Ahead of the fight, Hadebe stated that she was using the fight to advance her advocacy work highlighting the plight victims of domestic violence face, saying:

"I dedicate my fights to women and children who were abused and could not speak for themselves. "My fights are about telling them that they can fight what they went through, and also know that they are not alone. We need to be the change we wish to see in others."

Earlier, Sydney Ntsemi and Nelson Mbhele slugged it out in a middleweight bout, going the full six rounds. Mbhele outlasted Ntsemi, winning by unanimous decision with a score of 40-36, 40-36, 40-36

After that, Rofhiwa Maphupha and Thami Luthuli collided in a flyweight fight. Luthuli continuously landed punches on Maphupha, which proved to be the difference, as he also won by unanimous decision 40-36, 39-37, 39-37.

The first match of the main card saw Darrin Roussow going up against Thembani Mahlanga in a 6-round clash at super welterweight. Rossouw was too strong for Mahlanga, ending the fight in the sixth round by way of technical knockout.

Sithembiso Maduna and Abdul Aziz Kunert were up next in a featherweight match. Going the full distance of six rounds, Maduna was named the victor thanks to a split decision of 55-59, 58-56, 58-56. An intriguing super lightweight encounter occurred between Denis Mwale and Gift Bholo.
