To pinch-hit means batting instead of another player. Usually, they are marked as "PH" in box scores. The role became prominent in the early 20th Century following the introduction of specialised relief pitchers and the expansion of rosters. Mickey Welch of the New York Giants became the first PH in Major League Baseball history on 10 August 1889. He batted for teammate Hank O'Day, who reportedly got injured during the game. The first PH substituted into a game after non-injury substitutions was Cleveland Spiders first baseman Jack Doyle against the Brooklyn Grooms on 7 June 1892. His introduction helped the Spiders win the game.

A hit by a PH is known as a pinch hit. According to the rule, one may pinch-hit for an injured player, one struggling on the field or when someone faces discipline issues. The replaced player cannot return to the game. However, in some high school leagues, starting players can reenter the game after being replaced.
