The national federation in charge of track and field events in Kenya, Athletics Kenya (AK), has unveiled its preliminary list of the athletes who will represent the country at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.

AK held national trials over two days, with athletes bringing their A-game in pursuit of the lucrative Olympic ticket.

Athletes needed to finish in the top two and attain the set qualifying times by Olympics to qualify for the Summer Games. A third spot was reserved for the federation to give a wild card.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi sets third-fastest time in 800m

Emmanuel Wanyonyi delivered the performance of the trials with the world silver medalist in the 800m, dropping the third-fastest time ever in the race. Wanyonyi had suffered a scare in the semi-finals on June 14 when he fell and finished last in his heat. He, however, appealed and was cleared to run in the final, where he set the fastest time in the world since David Rudisha ran the world record in 2012.

Faith Kipyegon is back and firing

Double Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon also brought the sauce at Nyayo National Stadium, making light work of her opponents to win the 5000m and 1500m in her first appearances of the season.

Ferdinand Omanyala equally thrilled the ecstatic home crowd by running the fastest time in the 100m this year. The fastest man in Africa clocked 9.79 seconds as he aims for a better showing at his second Olympic games.

The athletes who haven't qualified in their set disciplines will have one last throw of the dice at the African championships in Cameroon next week. The qualification window for the Paris Games ends on June 30.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi: My Olympics plans

In a past interview with Sports Brief, Emmanuel Wanyonyi downplayed the Paris Olympics as he refused to set the targets for the games at an early stage.

Wanyonyi was keen on making it to Team Kenya first before outlining his ambitions. The world silver medalist is expected to renew his rivalry with world champion, Marco Arop.
