Kenya's Beatrice Chebet achieved a historic feat by breaking the women's 10,000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, on Saturday, May 25.

The 24-year-old athlete completed the race in 28 minutes and 54.15 seconds at Hayward Field, marking her first 10,000m event since March 2020.

Ethiopian runner Gudaf Tsegay finished second in 29:05.92, now the world's third-fastest time. The result also moved Tsegay to third on the all-time global list, per World Athletics.

Throughout the race, Tsegay and Chebet kept pace with the lights indicating the world record mark. It was only with three laps remaining that the Kenyan surged ahead, decisively taking the lead and setting her sights firmly on the world record. With 800 meters left, she increased her lead by two strides, prompting spectators to rise in excitement.

Chebet's record-breaking performance follows her significant achievements at last year's Prefontaine Classic, where Tsegay broke the 5000m world record, while she clocked the third-fastest time in history.

A reported by AP, the Kenyan has consistently showcased her prowess, winning silver and bronze medals in the 5000m at the World Championships over the past two years.

With these accolades, she is poised to make a remarkable debut at the Paris Olympics this summer.
