Alexander Mutiso Munyao produced a phenomenal performance to win the 2024 London Marathon.

The 27-year-old Kenyan pulled away from 41-year-old multiple world and Olympic champion, Kenenisa Bekele, to secure his first marathon major title.

Munyao will go back home not only with bragging rights, but also cheque as his reward.

The Kenyan was not seen as a favourite to win since the field consisted of Bekele, New York City Marathon champion, Tamirat Tola.

He clocked 2 hours, 4 minutes, 1 second to win. Bekele finished second, 14 seconds behind, while Emile Cairess of Britain finished third.

He dropped Bekele with around three kilometres and built a six-second gap that grew as the race wore on. Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir won the women's race, setting a new women's only world record.

Munyao is in a great position to secure a spot in the Kenyan team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The marathon star has slowly built a solid career. 2023 was probably his best year. He won the Prague Marathon in 2:05:09 in May, and then finished second at the Valencia Marathon in 2:03:11, per World Athletics.

The elite men's and women's able-bodied races and men’s and women’s wheelchair races had a prize pool of $308,000. Winners receive $55,000 each, per The Independent.

Therefore, Munyao took home $55,000. That is 7 million Kenyan shillings (1 USD=133Ksh).

If he makes the final Olympic squad for Kenya, he will have a chance of putting together the best year of his career. Can he do it in Paris?

Munyao named in Olympics squad

Sports Brief earlier reported on Munyao making the Kenyan marathon team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Munyao was named to the team alongside Eliud Kipchoge, Benson Kipruto, Timothy Kipklagat, and Vincent Ngetich.

Kipruto defeated Kipchoge at the 2024 Tokyo Marathon. Kiplagat finished second behind Kipruto.
