Going into the race, Simbine was confident of victory, and was targeting an under-ten-second finish.

The champion just missed out on his quest to finish in under 10 seconds, winning the race in 10.01 seconds.

His closest challenger was 18-year-old Bayanda Walaza, who finished in 10.27 seconds. Bradley Nkoana finished third in 10.29 seconds.

Walaza is the world’s fastest teenager, having clocked 10.13 seconds and 20.34 seconds in the 100m and 200m at the SA Junior Championships, News24 noted.

Despite the threat he posed, Walaza was no match for Simbine in the final.

Speaking after the race, the South African champion exclaimed how happy he was to defend his title.

“I’m still king,” Simbine declared with a smile.
“I am happy with the race and the win. Anytime I run in South Africa, I run fast,” he added.
