Full Breakdown of Kenya’s Gold Medals at 13th African Games

The 13th African Games drew to a close on Saturday after 16 days of nail-biting sports action in Ghana.

Kenya underperformed compared to the 2019 edition, but we got to see new stars steal the show.

Angella Okutoyi was probably the biggest star as she won the women's singles title in tennis for the first time in 46 years.

In total, Kenya won eight gold medals, eight silver and 21 bronze medals. The East African nation ended with a total of 37 medals. In 2019, IKenyua won 31 medals (11 gold).

Egypt finished top of the medals table with 191 medals (102 gold, 47 silver, 42 bronze).

In athletics, Nigeria finished top with 22 medals, (11 gold, 6 silver, 5 bronze). Ethiopia and South Africa finished second and third respectively.

Kenya finished fourth in track and field with six gold, six silver, and eight bronze medals. Here's a breakdown of Kenya's gold medals in the 2023 African Games.

Kenya's gold medals at African Games

Emily Ngii - race walk

Kneya's Ngii defeated Ethiopia's Teshager Sintayehu Masire to rwetian her title and win Kenya's first gold deal at the African games. Ngii clocked one hour, 37 minutes and 34 seconds.

The 37-year-old won gold in 2019 and finished fourth in the 2011 edition. She also won gold at the African championships in 2022. She finished third in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Mary Moraa - 400m

The world 800m champion comfortably won gold in the women's 400m gold in 50.57 seconds ahead of Nigeria's Esther Joseph Elo. Moraa is the first Kenyan to win the race since 1987, when Francisca Chepkurui won gold in the Nairobi Games. Tekla Chemwabai also won gold in 1973.

Beatrice Chepkoech - 3,000m

After missing out on the 5,000m gold, Chepkoech won her favourite race on March 20. The world record holder and world silver medalist clocked an African Games record of 9:15.61. Chepkoech beat Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai.

She will be looking to add an Olympic title to her resume at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Aron Cheminingwa - 800m

Cheminingwa became the first Kenyan to win the 800m since Japheth Kimutai in 1999. He clocked 1:45.72 to pi his compatriot Alex Kipngetich, who finished second. He will be looking to fight for an Olympic spot in the coming months.

Janeth Chepngetich - 10,000m

Chepngetich fended off Ethiopians to claim gold in the women's 10,000m in 33 minutes and 37 seconds. Ethiopia claimed the next four places.

It is the first major title for the 25-year-old. Can she end Kenya's drought in the distance at the Olympics?

Brian Komen - 1,500m

Komen staved off strong competition from Ethiopians to cross the line first in 3:39.19. Ethiopia's Ermias Shire Girma and his compatriot, Abel Kipsang.

Komen will be looking to make it into the Kenyan team for the 2024 Olympics.

Edwin Okong'o - boxing

Okong'o defeated Morocco's Yassine Elouarz in the men’s middleweight 75kg to win Kenya's first gold in boxing in 17 years.

Angella Okutoyi - tennis

The Kenyan beat the Egyptian in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to become the first Kenyan to win the title in 46 years since Jane Davies-Doxzon.

African Games athletics medal table

Sports Brief Earlier reported on the final African Games athletics medal table after the showpiece concluded on Saturday, March 23.

Nigeria dominated athletics ahead of global powerhouses Kenya and Ethiopia. The West Africans topped the athletics table, followed by Ethiopia, South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana, who rounded up the top five.
