Agnes Ngetich has made history by breaking the women's world 10km record at the 10K Valencia Ibercaja, a World Athletics Label road race.

In an extraordinary performance, the 22-year-old completed the race in an impressive 28:46 on Sunday. January, 14, 2024.

Ngetich's remarkable feat makes her the first woman ever to conquer the 10km distance in less than 29 minutes, surpassing the previous record set by Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw in Castellon two years ago by 28 seconds.

Ngetich hit the halfway mark in 14:13, obliterating the record for a mixed race by six seconds, set by Ethiopia’s Ejgayehu Taye in Barcelona in 2021.

It also matches the time clocked by Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet in a woman-only race in Barcelona just On December 31, 2023, as reported by World Athletics.

The world cross country bronze medallist’s time is even faster than the women's world record for the distance on the track, with Letesenbet Gidey’s world 10,000m record still unbroken at 29:01.03.

Ngetich’s compatriot, Emmaculate Anyango, secured the second spot in Valencia, crossing the finish line in 28:57.

Meanwhile, in the men’s race, Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo claimed victory after crossing the finish line in 26:48, beating second-placed Ethiopian Birhanu Balew (26:59).

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba congratulated Agnes Ngetich, praising her extraordinary accomplishment.

“Stepped out of church this blessed sunny Sunday to the beautiful news of Agnes Ngetich smashing the World Record in the 10km Road Race in Valencia, Spain. I have spoken with Agnes on the phone to congratulate her on this superb feat. The whole of Kenya is proud of you, Agie. Hongera!” said the Sports CS on his Twitter handle.

Provisional Olympics Marathon Team

Sports Brief in December 2023 reported when Athletics Kenya named the provisional marathon teams for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Kenya is the defending champion for both the titles they won in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Japan.

Men’s defending champion and ex-world record holder Eliud Kipchoge is among some of the prominent names in the list.
