The 2024 athletics season is upon us, and fans will get to watch the mouth-watering showdown between American sprinters, Noah Lyles and Fred Kerley.

Kerley will be taking part in his first 60m race in what will also be his debut at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. It will be the first time the American sprinter has raced indoors.

The former world 100m champion had a difficult 2023 season. He failed to reach the final of the men's 100m at the World Athletics Championships in Hungary but was part of the team, alongside Lyles, that won gold in the 4x100 relay.

Meanwhile, Lyles was superb in the 2023 season. He bagged three gold medals in Hungary, recording a personal best of 9.83 seconds in the 100m event.

Lyles won the 60m dash in last year's event, clocking 6.51 seconds, narrowly beating compatriot Trayvon Bromell, per NBC Sports. This will be a huge showdown since both stars want a great start to an Olympic year.

Fred Kerley and Noah Lyles' rivalry

These two sprinters do not see eye to eye, at least on the track. This will be their first clash since 2022, meaning the stakes will be high in February.

Before last year's World Athletics Championships, Kerley and Lyles exchanged words. In a Team USA press conference on August 18, 2022, Kerley warned his compatriot the 100m title was his, as Sports Brief reported at the time.

"I am Fred Kerley and it is my title. If Noah is running 9.65 seconds, then I am running faster."

Kerley was wrong. Lyles took the title and added two more in the same competition.

Lyles matches Usain Bolt's record

Sports Brief previously reported on Lyles equaling Usain Bolt's record after winning the 200m gold in Budapest, joining the Jamaican as the only man to win three consecutive 200m world titles.

Bolt achieved this on four successive occasions during the height of his dominance from 2009 to 2015. The only other to have three consecutive world titles is retired American all-rounder, Allyson Felix.
