World 5000m silver medalist Beatrice Chebet has smashed the women's 5-kilometre world record in Barcelona.

Taye finished second in 14:21, while Kenya's Lilian Kasait rounded up the top three after clocking 14:26. Chebet's win comes months after claiming gold in the inaugural World Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia.

The 23-year-old also won the world cross country crown in Bathurst in February and won the world 5000m bronze in Budapest in the World Athletics Championships.

Chebet has ended a phenomenal season with a win and will now focus on the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be her debut. Chebet will face tough competition from the Ethiopians, who have dominated the distance in the last few years.

The last Kenyan to win gold in the women's 5000m was Vivian Cheruiyot, per Reuters.

Chebet takes bronze

Chebet took her second global medal in the women's 5000m at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August.

Chebet clocked 14:54.33 to finish behind her compatriot Faith Kipyegon, who had won gold in the 1500m. Sifan Hassan finished second after 14 minutes and 54.11 seconds.

Kenya names provisional marathon team

Sports Brief earlier reported on Kenya naming their women's marathon team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Former World Record holder, Brigid Kosgei is also on the list, as is London Marathon and New York Marathon winner, Joycilline Jepkosgei.

Defending champion, Peres Jepchirchir is also on the list. The provisional team comes out months before the global showpiece, but it shows just how much talent Kenya has in the field.

Kenya have won two straight gold medals in the women's marathon after failing to win any in the previous Olympics editions.
