Faith Kipyegon: Kenyan Track Star Named Person of the Year by Major Newspaper

Faith Kipyegon has had quite a year.

The Kenyan track star broke records, won gold medals and raised the bar in athletics. A major Kenyan newspaper has awarded the superstar.

Earlier this month, the 29-year-old won the World Athletics Female Track Athlete of the Year following historic performances all through the year.

One of Kenya's leading newspapers, the Star, named her the Person of the Year. The award recognizes her incredible achievements in 2023. She beat the likes of Eliud Kipchoge

The double Olympic champion received 228 nominations out of the 2,123 total nominations from the public.

An even bigger 2024 awaits Kipyegon. She will be looking to win another Olympic gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Faith Kipyegon's incredible 2023

Kipyegon's 2023 season began in the Doha Diamond League meet in Qatar on May 5. She clocked 3:58.57 to win the women's 1,500m.

Her next 1,500m race was at the Golden Gala in Rome/Florence on June 2. She clocked a world record 3:49.11, but that was just the start of a legendary run.

Days later, on June 9 in Paris, the 29-year-old shattered the 5,000m world record, clocking 14:05.20 to beat world record holder Letesenbet Gidey. Gudaf Tsegay clocked 14:00.21 to break Kipyegon's record at the Diamond League final in September.

On July 21 in the Monaco Diamond League, the Kenyan double Olympic champion smashed the one-mile world record, finishing in 4:07.64.

In August she won two gold medals (1500m, 5000m) in the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

She then won the 1,500m in the Diamond League final on September 16. She finished third in the women's road mile at the World Athletics Road Running championships in Riga.

What Kipyegon earned for gold medals

Sports Brief previously reported on what Kipyegon earned for her gold medals at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

She won two gold medals, and will be entitled to $140,000. When converted to Kenyan shillings, she will make over Ksh20 million (1USD=145Ksh).

Kipyegon will take home $40,000 after her dominant win in the Diamond League final.
