Emmanuel Wanyonyi got the better of Marco Arop to win the Diamond League finals in Eugene on September 17. Wanyonyi clocked 1.42.80 - a new meet record.
Arop had asked for a quick 49.5-second pace at the 400 mark from the pacemaker Anderson Navasky. The Canadian shot to the front of the pile as soon as the gun went off, looking to dominate the race just behind the pacemaker.
However, he slacked off on the final bend, with Wanyonyi and Algerian Djamel Sedjati closing the gap rapidly. Wanyonyi, a former world junior champion, beat him on the line, with Sedjati settling for third.
Arop produced 1:42.85, while Sedjati clocked 1:43.06. All the podium finishers set new personal best times.
The race was a repeat of the finals at the World Athletics Championships, where Arop beat Wanyonyi to gold. The two then met at the Xiamen Diamond League a few days later, where the Kenyan exacted his revenge.
