Sprint icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has confirmed that the 2024 Paris Olympics will be her last. The veteran sprinter recently claimed silver and bronze at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest last month.

The 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, was her first Olympic Games. Since then, she's become an icon in track and field, inspiring millions of sprinters all over the world.

The 36-year-old has eight Olympic medals, three of them gold. She won the women's 100m gold in the 2008 and 2012 editions. She took bronze and silver in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, respectively.

Therefore, next year's showpiece will be her fifth, and if she gets a medal, it will cap off an incredible career. Furthermore, she is a ten-time world champion. She has won the women's 100m gold five times, per World Athletics.

Fraser-Pruce sustained an injury in Budapest last month, meaning she will miss the 2023 Diamond League final in Eugene. Her 2023 season has been injury-hit, but her focus now is Paris.

End of an era for Fraser-Pryce

The 36-year-old sprint legend revealed the news via Facebook.

"I got Paris on my mind…..My 5th and final one for all time," she said.

She will be 37 in Paris and 38 during the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan. It is unclear if she will retire after the Paris Olympics. She could keep running until she is 40, just like Cristiano Ronaldo and LeBron James, who are showing no signs of slowing down in their sport.

Fraser-Pryce is regarded as an icon in track and field, and only a few have a better medal haul than her.

Update on Fraser-Pryce injury

Sports Brief has also reported that Fraser-Pryce received a refreshing boost after it emerged that she did not pick up a severe injury.

Early reports from the Jamaican camp have now indicated that the preliminary reports on Fraser-Pryce's tests on her right leg have shown that the injury is not as severe as initially feared.
