- She is coming off a phenomenal 2023 World Athletics Championships, where she won three medals
Shericka Jackson produced another dominant performance to win the women's 200m at the Brussels Diamond League.
The newly crowned 200m world champion clocked 21.48 seconds, the fourth fastest time ever.
At a packed King Baudouin Stadium, it was Jackson against the clock, and she led the race from start to finish but will have to wait for the Diamond League final to take another stab at the world record.
Anthonique Strachan finished second, clocking 22.31 seconds, while USA's Jenna Prandini in 22.47 seconds. Britain's Daryll Neita rounded up the top four after crossing the finish line in 22.59 seconds.
The 29-year-old has been eyeing Florence Griffith-Joyner's long-standing world record (21.34) and missed it by just 0.07 at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, where she clocked 21.41 seconds.
World record evades Jackson
Before the event, Jackson said she would be attempting the world record after failing to break it in Zurich. After running a championship record 21.41 seconds in Budapest, Jackson seemed to be edging closer and was on track to smash it in Brussels.
She destroyed the field, but it wasn't to be. Interestingly, she was running on the same track that her compatriot Yohan Blake set the second fastest time of a man in the 200m in 2011. Jackson, who is a two-time world champion in the women's 200m, has three of the top five fastest times ever in the distance.
She was confident before the race.
"My coach and I have spoken and we are going after it this year. I hope to get it tomorrow [Brussels]. And if I do, then that will probably ease a little pressure off me going into Eugene. But if not, we have another shot at Eugene," via World Athletics.
