Emmanuel Wanyonyi exacted his revenge by beating World Champion Marco Arop in the men's 800m at the Xiamen Diamond League on Saturday.
Wanyonyi won the race in breathtaking fashion despite Arop breathing down his neck in the closing stages. The race was a repeat of the World Athletics Championships final last week, where Arop beat Wanyonyi to the world title.
The 19-year-old Kenyan had to settle for silver in Budapest, but he was not to be denied in China, running the fastest time this year of 1:43:20 to take it on the line.
Arop used 1:43:24, with Robert Benjamin of France finishing third with a time of 1:43:88. Another Kenyan, Wycliffe Kinyamal, was fourth.
The win takes Wanyonyi to second place behind Kinyala in the standings. Both Kenyans will compete in the Diamond League finals in Eugene in two weeks' time.
Christian Coleman wins men's 100m
Sports Brief has also reported that Christian Coleman ran the fastest time this year to win the Xiamen Diamond League in China on Saturday.
The 2019 World Champion clocked 9.83 seconds, equalling the time clocked by Noah Lyles and Zharnel Hughes as the world leads.
2022 World Champion Fred Kerley finished third behind Jamaica's Kishane Thompson. Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs was seventh. Thompson clocked a personal best time of 9.85 seconds, while Kerley used a time of 9.96 seconds.
Zurich DL: Jackson wins 200m
At the same time, Sports Brief has reported that Shericka Jackson comfortably won the women's 200m at the Zurich Diamond League days after winning the world title at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
Britain's Daryll Neita finished second, clocking 22.25 seconds. American Kayla White completed the top three after clocking 22.33 seconds.
