AthleticsXiamen Diamond League: Christian Coleman Equals World Lead, Beats Fred Kerley in China
- Fred Kerley's poor form continued with a third-place finish at the inaugural Xiamen Diamond League
- Kerley, who had promised to win the race, was looking to make amends after a poor outing at the World Championships
- Former World Champion Christian Coleman equalled the fastest time this year to win the race
Christian Coleman ran the fastest time this year to win the Xiamen Diamond League in China on Saturday.
The 2019 World Champion clocked 9.83 seconds, equalling the time clocked by Noah Lyles and Zharnel Hughes as the world leads.
2022 World Champion Fred Kerley finished third behind Jamaica's Kishane Thompson. Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs was seventh. Thompson clocked a personal best time of 9.85 seconds, while Kerley used a time of 9.96 seconds.
It was another insipid performance from Kerley, who failed to make it to the World Championships finals to defend his title. He, however, bounced back to run the second leg of the 4 by 100m relay race as Team USA won gold.
The American is third on the log and will compete in the finals on home soil in two weeks' time.
This was the first time in three years that the Diamond League was making a return to China, with Xiamen replacing the previous venue of Shenzhen.
Emmanuel Wanyonyi wins men's 800m
Sports Brief has also reported that Emmanuel Wanyonyi exacted his revenge by beating World Champion Marco Arop in the men's 800m at the Xiamen Diamond League on Saturday.
Wanyonyi won the race in breathtaking fashion despite Arop breathing down his neck in the closing stages. The race was a repeat of the World Athletics Championships final last week, where Arop beat Wanyonyi to the world title.
The 19-year-old Kenyan had to settle for silver in Budapest, but he was not to be denied in China, running the fastest time this year of 1:43:20.
