Noah Lyles had a phenomenal 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, last week. He won three gold medals in the men's 100-metre and 200m events and anchored Team USA to gold in the 4x100 relay.

However, he thunderously called out the NBA over the weekend for calling themselves world champions, a comment that ruffled the feathers of the basketball community.

The 26-year-old clearly poked the bear over the weekend and received never-ending condemnation from NBA stars like Kevin Durant, analysts, fans, and even Canadian rapper Drake.

Lyles took issue with NBA teams and players calling themselves world champions after winning the championship.

"We are the world. We have almost every country out here fighting and thriving and putting on a flag to show that they are represented. There ain't no flags in the NBA," he said via Eurosport.

Those remarks were greeted with derision from fans across social media and became a major talking point for American sports television shows.

Richardson defends Lyles

Richardson, just like Lyles, had a successful World Athletics Championships in Budapest. She stunned Jamaicans Shericka Jackson and veteran Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to win the women's 100m world title.

The 23-year-old also took bronze in the 200m final and anchored USA's 4x100 team to gold, beating the Jamaicans again.

The sprinter took to social media to defend Lyles, who is yet to respond to the jibes from NBA stars.

"I’m standing with Noah on this one! The organization have players from different countries but do they compete against different countries. You have to go against the world in order to be a world champion!"

Given Lyles' outspoken demeanour, a response is probably getting cooked as we speak.

Richardson wins women's 100m

Sports Brief earlier reported on American star, Richardson stunning Jamaican stars to win the women's 100m title in Hungary.

She clocked a championship record of 10.65 seconds, denying the defending champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Jackson.

It was also the first women's 100m world championship win by an American athlete since 2017 when the late Tori Bowie won.
