Faith Kipyegon is the name on every Kenyan’s lips as the gem of an athlete put the country on the world map thanks to her heroics at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
The mother of one once again defied the odds on Saturday, August 26 to clinch hers and the country’s second gold at the games as she ran to victory in the 5000m event.
With her victory in the 1500m in mind, the 5000m gold was far more impressive as it was only the sixth time the athlete was running the race competitively.

Other SportsMany who are familiar with Kipyegon’s races will know her tactic is simple but rather daunting at the same time; keeping up with the heavyweights at the front of the pack before breaking away when it matters. This is exactly what she did on Saturday as she burst to life in the final 600 metres to overtake defending champion, Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay.
Despite pressure from her long-time rivals Sifan Hassan and fellow Kenyan Beatrice Chebet, Kipyegon resorted to practically a full on sprint as she held the duo off to win a race she is fairly inexperienced in with a time of 14:53.88, as cited on Olympics.com.
In her post-race comments, the athlete, considered one of the greatest Kenya has ever produced, expressed her delight in winning two gold medals.
“I have been patiently waiting to break world records and win double gold. But my dream just came true. It is amazing,” she said.
