- Kenya was dethroned after Marco Arop outpaced Wanyonyi in the last of the two laps
- It is a welcome medal for Wanyonyi, nonetheless, who is only 19 years old,
Emmanuel Wanyonyi struck silver for Kenya in the men's 800m at the World Athletics Championships on Saturday night.
The race was won by Canada's Marco Arop, who clocked 1:44.24.
Wanyonyi was the country's sole flag bearer in the finals after other Kenyans, Ferguson Rotich and Alex Kipngetich, failed to make it to the final. Emmanuel Korir, who was the defending champion, was also eliminated in the first round as he continues to battle an injury-plagued season.
It is a major improvement for Wanyonyi, who agonizingly missed out on podium places during last year's championships in Oregon—the 19-year-old cited inexperience as the reason behind his fourth-place finish.
He headed to Budapest as the second-fastest man this year and topped it off with a silver medal, posting a time of 1:44.53 behind the gigantic Arop.
He started off the race well, leading the pack of 8 athletes as they took the bell after the first lap of 52 seconds. Arop uncharacteristically started the race at the back before injecting the pace in the last lap.
Great Britain's Ben Pattison finished third.
Faith Kipyegon shines again
Sports Brief has also reported that Faith Kipyegon produced a brilliant performance to win the women's 5000m final and her second gold at the 2023 World Athletics Championships after winning 1500m gold earlier in the competition.
The Kenyan clocked 14:53.88 to become the first woman to win the 1500m and 5000m double. The 29-year-old now has Kenya's two gold medals at the event. Her long-time adversary, Sifan Hassan, finished second after 14 minutes and 54.11 seconds. Hassan took bronze in the 1500m.
Beatrice Chebet, the World Cross Country champion, took bronze in 14:54.33. Her compatriot Margaret Chelimo finished fourth.
