Kenya finished the championships as the highest-ranked African nation. Faith Kipyegon became the first woman to win gold medals in the 1,500 metres and 5,000m before Mary Moraa powered to victory in the 800m on the final day.
Femke Bol got the Netherlands' first gold medal on Thursday night by winning the 400m hurdles. She made amends after falling in the dying minutes of the 4x400m mixed relay from a potential gold-winning position. The second-fastest woman in hurdles history capped it off with another gold in the 4 by 400m women's relay.
Norway's Karsten Warholm reclaimed his world title in the men's category just as his compatriot, Jakob Ingebrigsten, did in the 5,000m after missing out on the men's 1,500m gold.
Yulimar Rojas defended her triple jump title after suffering a major scare in the first three jumps. The Venezuelan needed a huge leap of 15.08 in her fourth jump to win her fourth successive title.
Ethiopia led a 1-2 finish to win the women's marathon on the penultimate day.
More drama followed as Armando Duplantis retained his pole vault title before the USA grabbed a double gold in the men's and women's 4 by 100m relay.
