  • Soufiane El Bakkali retained his world title in the 3000m steeplechase final on Tuesday evening
  • The Moroccan beat the world record holder Lamecha Girma with a characteristic late surge
  • Abraham Kibiwot claimed Kenya's third medal at the event after he finished third

Soufiane El Bakkali bagged his second consecutive world title in the men's 3000m steeplechase after a brilliant run in Budapest on August 22.

El Bakkali edged Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma after much fanfare had been focused on the two greats of recent years.

Heading into the race, El Bakkali was unbeaten since September 2021, while Girma was and is still the world record holder. The Moroccan outlasted Girma in the last lap to condemn him to a fourth successive second-place finish in a major global event.

Commonwealth champion Abraham Kibiwott bagged bronze despite falling down in the last lap to take Kenya's medal tally in Budapest to three.

El Bakkali used a relatively slow time of 8:03.53, with the heat in the Hungarian capital understandably taking a toll on athletes. Girma clocked 8:05.44. Kibiwott picked himself up after the tumble to finish with 8:11.98 ahead of his compatriot, Leonard Bett.

Faith Kipyegon retains her title

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Kenya's Faith Kipyegon has won her third 1500m world title at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, capping off a sensational season.

The Kenyan superstar clocked 3:54.87, beating long-time rival Sifan Hassan, who finished third. The double-Olympic champion led the race from start to finish, and the win was never in doubt.

Ethiopia's Diribe Welteji took bronze. The win cements Kipyegon's status as one of the greatest 1500m runners of all time.

Why Fraser-Pryce wears colourful wigs

Sports Brief also reported that apart from her frightening pace whenever she takes off, the mother of one is always unmistakable when picking her out of the starting line-ups due to her colourful wigs.

Last year during the World Championships in Oregon, Fraser-Pryce had a different colourful wig for every day she stepped out on the track, from the heats to the semi-finals to the finals. The five-time World Champion has previously explained why she wears a wig on race days.
