Marione Fourie is one step closer to qualifying for the Women’s 100m Hurdles final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

The South African was one of two athletes from the country competing in the heats for the event on Day 4 of the championships.

Fourie booked her place in the semi-final after she finished third in heat two, finishing in a time of 12.71.

She finished behind the United States of America’s Nia Ali and Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska as an automatic qualifier.

Fellow South African, Taylon Bieldt could not replicate her compatriot’s success and failed to get into the top four of her heat.

Fourie will face stiff competition as she looks to book her place in the final, as Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has also booked her spot in the semis. Fourie is no pushover, though.

As noted by SuperSport, the 21-year-old set a new South African record in the event when she finished in a time of 12.55 earlier this year in Switzerland.

Wayde to contest semi-finals

South Africans will also be keeping an eye on world record holder, Wayde van Niekerk.

The talented sprinter will compete in the 400m semi-final later in the evening. The Men's 400m race is set to get underway at 9 pm CAT.

Having found a return to form after a nasty injury, van Niekerk is looking to prove that he is the world record holder for a reason.

Van Niekerk sets new record

Wayde van Niekerk is finding his form once again in the 400 metres.

The South African athlete has been plagued by injuries since the 2016 Olympics in Rio, but has found his form in the early athletics season as he looks to return to the top of the mountain.

As reported by Sports Brief, van Niekerk ran a blistering pace in his last outing at the Silesia Diamond League, setting a new meeting record in the process.
