Kenya's Faith Kipyegon has won her third 1,500m world title at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, capping off a sensational season.
The Kenyan superstar clocked 3:54.87, beating long-time rival, Sifan Hassan, who finished third. Ethiopia's Diribe Welteji took silver.
The double-Olympic champion led the race from start to finish, and the win was never in doubt. The world record holder is now one of the most decorated Kenyan athletes ever.
The win cements Kipyegon's status as one of the greatest 1,500m runners of all time.
Ethiopia's Welteji clocked 3:55.69 while Hassan, who had a frustrating 10,000m performance, finished third in 3:56.00, per World Athletics.
Kipyegon's compatriot, Nelly Chepchirchir, finished fifth in 3:57.90 - her personal best. Kenya now has a gold and along with a silver medal won by Daniel Ebenyo in the 10,000m.
Great year for Kipyegon
The 29-year-old has been on a tear in the last few years. The last time she lost a 1,500m race was in 2021 to Hassan at the Florence Diamond League meeting.
This year alone, Kipyegon has obliterated three world records. The first to fall was the 1,500m record on June 2, where she became the first woman to break the 3:50.00 barrier in the distance, clocking 3:49.11.
A week later, she smashed the 5,000m world record in Paris, then shattered the mile record with a stunning 4:07.64 at the Monaco Diamond League on July 21.
