  • The Kenyan has said that he will evaluate the performance and bounce back

Kenyan sprinter, Ferdinand Omanyala produced an underwhelming performance in the 100-metre final at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

He finished 7th in the highly anticipated race, which was won by the USA's Noah Lyles. After the race, Omanyala reflected on the performance.

The 27-year-old clocked 10.07 seconds, and although he made a good start, he didn't have the top-end speed other competitors had. For instance, Lyles had a poor start, but his finish was superb.

Omanyala barely made the final. He finished third in Heat 1 of the semi-final with a time of 10.02 seconds, meaning he qualified as a fast loser. Therefore, the writing was on the wall for the Kenyan star. He is the fastest man in African history but has now fallen short on the biggest stage.

Botswana's Letsile Tebogo finished second in 9.88 seconds, while Zharnel Hughes took bronze. Jamaica's Oblique Seville finished fourth. Tebpogo and Seville were separated by four-thousandths of a second, per World Athletics.

Omanyala reflects on disappointing performance

Speaking after the event, Omanyala was unsure about what happened in the final.

"I really can't tell what happened today. My body was just not firing from the semis like it did yesterday. We'll just have to go back and see where to correct and what to do best next time," he said, via Katami Michelle.

He understands that many Kenyans are unhappy with the result, but it is what it is. Another missed opportunity has passed one of Kenya's greatest sprinters, but he has the 2024 Olympics to right the wrongs.

"I know many are disappointed with the result but there is no way we are going back in that. No way you are going back in time we have to accept what happened and see how to get better next time."

He won the Monaco Diamond League a few months ago and will be looking to get back to winning ways.

Letsile Tebogo makes history

Sports Brief also reported on Botswana's Letsile Tebogo making history after finishing second in the men's 100m at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

He became the first man in Africa to win a medal in the 100m at the World Championships. Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala finished seventh in the final.

Tebogo will be looking to win a medal in the 200-metres.
