Olympic and world 400m hurdles champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone announced that a knee injury will prevent her from defending her title at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
The American was one of the favorites to win gold in Budapest later this month and was also set for a showdown with Femke Bol in Brussels on September 8th after the global showpiece.
McLaughlin has become one of the biggest athletes in track and field, and this latest setback means that her 2023 season could be over.
She announced the news through her Instagram on Friday.
“I am sad to share that I must withdraw from this year’s World Championship meet in Budapest. After consulting with my doctors and coaches, I need to take care of a minor knee issue so that I can be fully healthy for next year’s Paris Olympics. I look forward to seeing everyone back on the track soon!”
McLaughlin-Levrone is the reigning Olympic and world champion in the 400m hurdles and was set to compete in the flat 400m in Budapest. She is the fastest woman in the 400m this year after clocking 48.74 at the USA Championships last month, per World Athletics.
Inside new track and field rules
In less than two weeks, over 2,000 athletes from at least 190 countries will troop to Hungary's capital, Budapest, for the World Athletics Championships.
As Sports Brief reported, the nine-day event starts on August 19 and sees athletes compete in 49 events - 24 for each gender, plus the mixed relay event.
Ahead of the championships, World Athletics has approved new rules that will take effect this month after consulting with elite athletes and coaches.
