- The Kenyan registered his first-ever win in the Diamond League by winning the men's 100m at the Monaco meet
- He narrowly edged Botswana's sprinter Letsile Tebogo
Ferdinand Omanyala has won his first 100m race at the Diamond League. The Kenyan narrowly beat Botswana's Letsile Tebogo in Monaco.
The fastest man in Africa clocked 9.92 seconds, while Tebogo came second in 9.93 seconds. Jamaica's Ackeem Blake finished third in 10.00 seconds.
The 27-year-old Kenyan becomes the first Kenyan to win the 100m Diamond League race and heads into the 2023 World Athletics championships high in confidence.
The Commonwealth Games champions in 100m had a shaky start but recovered well to beat the youngster from Botswana. He also defeated his idol, Yohan Blake, who finished fourth after 10.01 seconds.
Omanyala was the favorite for the race, which was missing world and Olympic champion Fred Kerley and South Africa'sAkani Simbine, who leads the standings in the 100 meters. The Kenyan sprinter is third in the standings behind those two.
Sunday's Diamond League meet in London will be the last track and field event before the hugely anticipated 2023 World Athletics championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Omanyala eyeing world title
The two-time African champion has had a great season and ran 9.84 in May, but he will face tough competition at the World Athletics championships.
Fred Kerley, world 200m champion, and Noah Lyles will take part in the race, meaning the fight for a medal will be epic. Omanyala has not beaten Kerley this season in the Diamond League series, and he lost to Lyles in the Paris Diamond League.
Therefore, the Kenyan sprinter will need to go the extra mile to beat the two Americans who are favorites.

FootballFaith Kipyegon shatters mile record
Before we witness Omanyala win his first ever Diamond League race at Monaco, his compatriot Faith Kipyegon smash the Mile record on the same track as Sports Brief reported earlier.
She clocked 4.07.64 to lower Sifan Hassan's record of 4.12.33 set in 2019.
It is the third world record that Kipyegon has broken after setting new records for the 1500m and 5000m at the Florence and Paris Diamond Leagues in June.
