5000m world record-holder, Faith Kipyegon comfortably won the final of the women's 5000m in the Athletics Kenya trials on Friday afternoon.

Kipyegon clocked 14:53.90, beating Lilian Kasait, who came in second, and Margaret Chelimo, who finished third.

Kipyegon looked comfortable throughout the race and was toe-to-toe with Kasait for a brief moment before she stormed to victory in the final lap, per Justin Lagat.

Since she has the wild card for the 1500m, she will run the two races in Budapest. Amazingly, the Kenyan holds the record in both distances.

The 29-year-old shocked the world by breaking the 5000m record at the Paris Diamond League meet in June. The Kenyan double Olympic champion in the 1500m clocked 14:05.20, beating Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey, who was the previous world record-holder.

A week before smashing the 5000m world record, Kipyegon shattered the 1500m world record in Florence, Italy.

Kipyegon will try and help Kenya win the race at the World Athletics Championships, which is being hosted by Hungary. The title has eluded Kenya for many years.

Kipyegon vs. Chebet

Kipyegon will fly Kenya's flag in the 5000m, reportedly alongside world 5000m silver medalist, Beatrice Chebet.

The 1500m semis in Budapest will be on August 20th, followed by the finals on August 22nd. The semis of the 5000m race will be on August 23, while the final is scheduled for August 26.

Chebet is the Commonwealth Games and Africa 5000m champion. Hellen Obiti won the 5000m World Athletics title in London in 2017 and 2019 in Doha, Qatar.

List of Kenyan record-holders

Sports Brief earlier listed every Kenyan who currently holds a world record in athletics.

Eliud Kipchoge, Brigid Kosgei, and Beatrice Chepkoech are some Kenyan runners that currently hold the world records in athletics.

Kipchoge is a global icon after he became the first man to run a marathon in under two hours.
