AthleticsZharnel Hughes: British Runner in Disbelief After Becoming Fastest Man in the World in 2023
- Zharnel Hughes won the men’s 100m event at the World Athletics Tour in New York
- The British star set a new record as the UK's fastest man with a 9.83-second time
- He is also the fastest man in the world in 2023 with a time he previously predicted
Zharnel Hughes has become Britain’s fastest-ever sprinter with a record time at World Athletics Tour in New York, and he could not believe what he had achieved.
Hughes won the 100-metre event with a blistering time of 9.83 seconds, surpassing the previous British record time of 9.87 seconds set by Linford Christie at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart.
Hughes is also the fastest man in the world this year - to add more context, he is also the second fastest-ever European sprinter.
According to BBC Sports, only Italy’s Marcell Jacobs ran faster with a time of 9.80 at the Tokyo 2021.
Hughes in disbelief at record
The 27-year-old was in disbelief after finishing the race, double-checking his time because he claimed to have seen it in a dream.
“I woke up with a dream this morning. This morning I woke up with 9.83 on my mind. When I looked at the clock and saw 9.83, I don’t know if you saw my reaction, but I was like, ‘What just happened there?’ It actually came through,” he said, via SportBible.
Hughes later shared a handwritten note of his prediction on his Instagram, which was captured by the BBC on social media.

The American sprinter equalled the Jamaican's mark for the most 200-metre contests with times of less than 20 seconds, and could still make the record his own.

AthleticsLyles is now the third fastest 200m sprinter in history, behind Bolt’s 19.19 seconds and Yohan Blake’s 19.26, and is being expected to eclipse even more milestones.
