  • American star Noah Lyles won the 200m New York City Grand Prix
  • The 25-year-old marked an impressive time of only 19.83 seconds
  • He also equalled Usain Bolt's record for most 200m race victories

Noah Lyles has matched an impressive record held by none other than legendary sprinter, Usain Bolt. The American sprinter equalled the Jamaican's stats for the most 200-metre contests with times of less than 20 seconds.

The 25-year-old was able to run a time of just 19.83 seconds at the NYC Grand Prix at Randall Island’s Icahn Stadium on June 24.

According to NBC Sports, Lyles’ time was good enough for first place in the men’s 200m race. To claim the record outright, he simply needs to run one more race of that distance in under 20 seconds.

Time is on the American's side to achieve this milestone because he will only be 26 years old next month.

After the race, Lyles told NBC’s Lewis Johnson:

“It’s not perfect, but it was very fun.”

As for this year, the Florida-born athlete has the fastest 200m time at 19.67 seconds.

Lyles is now the third-fastest 200m sprinter ever, behind Bolt’s 19.19 seconds and Yohan Blake’s 19.26 seconds.

When Lyles won two gold medals at the 2016 World U20 Championships, he made headlines.

The native of Gainesville, Florida, in the USA, also took home the bronze medal in the 200m race at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Bolt hopeful of athletics return

This comes at a time when the legend is considering returning to track and field. Sports Brief reported on the Jamaican saying he is hopeful of making a return six years after retiring.

Bolt wants to return to athletics to play a role other than being an active athlete, claiming the sport has undergone something of a decline since he called it quits around six years earlier.

Lyles' advice for 'perfect run'

Sports Brief also reported on Lyles' advice for a 'perfect run', according to a video he posted on his official YouTube channel after equalling Bolt's tally of sub-20 200m races.

The Floridian's guidelines encompassed how to begin a sprint from the starting blocks, how to utilise the entire length of the track, and how to finish across this distance.

British athlete becomes world's fastest

In related news, Sports Brief reported on Zharnel Hughes becoming Britain’s fastest-ever sprinter with a record time at World Athletics Tour in New York.

He won the 100m event in a blistering time of 9.83 seconds, surpassing the previous British record of 9.87 seconds set by legendary Linford Christie in 1993.
