FootballEliud Kipchoge: Remembering When the GOAT Became First Person to Run Sub Two Hour Marathon Race in Austria
- Eliud Kipchoge set unprecedented history three years ago when he became the first person to run a race under 2 hours
- Guided by the mantra No Human Is Limited, Kipchoge took to the streets of Vienna to cement his name as the greatest marathoner ever seen
- He recently broke his own world record after shaving a clean 30 seconds from a record he set in 2018
It's been three years and he is still the greatest marathoner the world has ever seen. Eliud Kipchoge's place in history is already assured and it will take another supernatural human being to break the records he has set.
For starters, Kipchoge has only lost two marathon races in his entire career. Of the two he has lost, it is only at the 2020 London marathon where he finished outside the podium places.
On 12 October 2019, Kipchoge took to the streets of Vienna, the capital city of Austria, located in Central Europe.
The mission was simple: to run a marathon in under two hours. His world marathon record then stood at 2:01:39. No one, not even Kipchoge himself, had come close to running 42 kilometres in under 2 hours.

Bankrolled by Britain's richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe of the INEOS company, Kipchoge ran behind his 41 interchanging pacemakers, cheered on by the sizeable crowd in Vienna.
He started off at the Reichsbrucke Bridge in Vienna and ran an almost consistent pace of 2 minutes 50 seconds per kilometre.
The mammoth crowd in Vienna cheered him on
Towards the end of the race, with less than 2 kilometres to go, the then 34-year-old sensed that victory was nigh. Encouraged by the roaring crowd, he surged forward with quick but steady steps as he pointed to the crowd with a huge smile.
Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe: Top 6 players who could win Ballon d'Or 2023
Football1 hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds after the gun went off at the starting line, the father of three cut the tape to etch his name as the first human being, dead or living, to run a marathon in under 2 hours.
His loving wife was at the finishing line to receive him
At the finishing line, his wife Grace Sugutt embraced him and possibly thought, for the umpteenth time, how good of a choice she had made. Sir Ratcliffe was there too, as was Kenya's Deputy President (now President) Dr William Ruto.
The feat wasn't officially identified as a world record due to the extremely special conditions it had been run under. Kipchoge however - and all the 50 million Kenyans cheering him on - certainly did not care.
He did however, break his marathon record at the Berlin marathon this year. It now officially stands at 2:01:09.

Eliud Kipchoge shatters his own marathon record in Berlin
Sports Brief had earlier reported that the world's greatest marathoner Eliud Kipchoge shattered his own World marathon record at the Berlin Marathon with a time of 2:01:09.
The previous world record stood at 2:01:39, which he set himself in 2018.
His closest challenger going into the race was Ethiopian Guye Adola. Adola fell off the pace at the 15-kilometre mark however, leaving Kipchoge to chase history.
