The Athletics meet is being held at the Moi International Sports Centre to determine who will represent Kenya in Africa Athletics Championships slated for Mauritius from June 8th to June 12th.

Omanyala is the 100m African record holder having run a time of 9.77 seconds at the Kip Keino Classic last year. He is in a fine run of form and he intends to win a title at the Africa games.

He was also part of the 4 by 100 relay team that won gold yesterday. He is now a three-time national champion.

Speaking to Capital Sports, Omanyala quipped that he would like to match his record with a corresponding title.

Of course, it bothers me that I am the African record holder but no title to match the record. I want to go there and win the Championship to boost my confidence.

He recently won the ASA Athletics Grandprix 4 in South Africa. The 26-year-old beat Akani Simbine in the race organized in Johannesburg. Simbine is the reigning Commonwealth Games champion. Omanyala used 9.98 to cross the line while his opponent used 10.11.

Maxmilah Imali of the National Police Service(NPS) set a new national record of 11.35 seconds to clinch victory in the women’s category. She finished ahead of Jacinta Nyamahunga and Monica Zafania. Imali broke her own record of 11.77. She set that record at the NPS championships in March.

At the same time, Athletics Kenya has announced that the prize money for the Nairobi City Marathon will be 6 million Kenya shillings. The marathon is slated for Sunday 8th May at the newly constructed Nairobi Expressway.

The prize kitty is the biggest ever in Africa. The competition will have the 5km, 10km, half marathon and marathon categories.
