African 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala was in impressive form on Wednesday, April 13 as he defeated South Africa’s two-time Olympic finalist Akani Simbine in the 100m final in Germiston.

The Kenyan clocked an impressive 9.98 seconds to win the race ahead of Simbine, who finished with 10.11.

Bradley Nkoana emerged third with a time of 10.32.

In another show of his prowess on the 100m track, this was Omanyala’s second 100m race of the outdoor season and it came just a week after he opened his campaign in South Africa with another win in Potchefstroom.

Speaking after the race, Omanyala said his aim was to complete the race in under 10 seconds.

"My main aim was to run under 10 and I was not competing against him (Simbine); I was running against the finish line," said Omanyala, who won in Potchefstroom last week.
"I’ve achieved what I came to achieve in South Africa. It was a good start to the season and when you run these times at this point in the season then you’re expecting a good season going forward."

In the other races of the night, 17-year old Viwe Jingqi won the women’s 200m race with a time of 23.10 in what was a huge upset.

Clarence Munyai won in the men’s 200m with a time of 20.33, while Isaac Makwala had a torrid night as he finished fourth with a time of 20.89.

Harambee Stars could miss 2023 AFCON amid FIFA ban

In football, Harambee Stars could miss out on an appearance in the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Qualifiers for the 2023 AFCON are already underway, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in July.

However, CAF has warned Kenya may not be listed among the countries that will be battling for the qualifiers owing to their FIFA ban.
