Kenyan long-distance runner, Rhonex Kipruto, has won the men's New York Half Marathon.
The Sunday, March 20, race saw Kipruto cut the tape in 1:00:30 to finish first ahead of Kenyan-born athlete, Edward Cheserek.
Ethiopia’s Teshome Melkone completed the podium after he clocked 1:00:40, three seconds behind Cheserk.
How Kipruto won the race
Making his debut for the first time this season, Kipruto ran in a pack of at least five athletes before he broke away after 5km.
However, the group caught up with him before he surged forward once again to establish a considerable lead leaving his competitors playing catch up.
Cheserek, Melkone and USA-based Shadrack Kipchirchir are among the athletes who had given the 2019 World Championships bronze winner a run for his money.
Kipruto reacts to his victory
Speaking after his win, the 22-year-old thanked everyone who had turned out to cheer them up as he cited New York's weather conditions as a springboard of the victory.
“I didn’t want to get to the finish with the group and that is why I dropped them and this worked well for me and I’m happy I managed to win the race,” he said as quoted by Nation Sport.
“New York has been good to me and I must thank the organizers and the crowd has been supportive. I would love to be back again. The weather conditions were good and the course is hilly, but I did my best to make sure that I win the race,” he added.

FootballEliud Kipchoge conquers Tokyo
Earlier, Sports Brief reported Kenyans reigned supreme during the 2022 edition of the Tokyo Marathon as World record-holders Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei triumphed.
Kipchoge won the men's race in 2:02:40 to beat fellow countryman Amos Kipruto and Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola.
The time posted by the 37-year-old posted is now the third-fastest of his career and the fourth-fastest in history.
