Allan Wanga: Veteran Kenyan Striker Announces Retirement in Emotional Statement

Veteran Kenyan footballer Allan Wanga has finally called the curtains on a lucrative football career spanning more than 14 years.

Wanga has been the subject of speculation over his next footballing move in recent months but on Friday, September 10, he put all rumours to bed with a heartbreaking announcement.

The 35-year old took to his social media to make the announcement in a lengthy statement where he expressed his love and passion for the game.

“Fourteen years doing something that brings you joy, satisfaction and pride is a blessing. I have lived this blessing since I first kicked a football at a tender age and stepped into the stadium professionally,” he stated.
“My love for football has taken me places I had never imagined I would go, both for club and national duty. I have witnessed wins and losses, lifted trophies, endured the pain of being so close yet so far to important wins, through it all, I have been lifted by the love and support of an incredible army of supporters. “
“Without you, my fans, teammates, technical benches across the clubs that I have played for, my family, I wouldn’t have had the motivation to keep going. “
“Please accept my sincerest thanks for keeping me grounded, lifted me up when I needed that boost and kept me in check when I needed to get my game better.”

Wanga’s career profile and stats

An alumni of St. Paul’s Shikunga and the University of Nairobi, Wanga began his career with the lower tier Lolwe in Kisumu before eventually making his way to Tusker FC in 2007.

It was during his debut season that he made a name for himself, scoring an impressive 21 goals which helped the Brewers lift the title that season.

His performances also earned him a call up to the national team Harambee Stars where he was a regular for the side until 2019.

He moved to Angola champions Petro Atletico where he spent two years before securing a move to Azerbaijani club FC Baku in 2010 on a six-month contract.

In 2011, he joined Vietnamese side Hoàng Anh Gia Lai who would later loan him out back to Kenya to AFC Leopards where he eventually made settled on a permanent deal until 2014.

He then moved to Sudanese giants Al Merrikh before having a brief stint with Tanzanian outfit Azam in 2015 and eventually moving back to Kenya, this time, making a return to Tusker in 2016.

Wanga’s last stop in his club career was with Kakamega Homeboyz where he played between 2018 and 2021.
