Super Eagles technical crew, headed by Finidi George, were spotted during the Nigeria Professional League game between Akwa United and Heartland FC.

The Nigerian national team are in town for their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa, billed for the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, June 7.

Three players from the NPFL, Kenneth Igboke (Rangers International), Ojo Olorunleke (Enyimba) and Sodiq Ismail (Remo Stars), have already arrived in camp, forfeiting crucial matches for their title-chasing teams to answer the national call.

Finidi and his assistants took time out to see the highly entertaining NPFL fixture as they continued to shop for talents for the national team possibly.

After a barren first half, Ubong Friday opened the scoring for the hosts on the hour mark and then an own goal by Chinedu Ozor sealed a 2-0 win for the home side.

With the victory, Akwa United improved their chances of survival, moving to 15th position on the log with 43 points from 34 matches, Daily Trust reports.

On the other hand, Heartland will need a 'miracle' to avoid the drop. They languish in 18th position with 32 points and the same number of matches.

Following their goalless draw with Sporting Lagos, Enugu Rangers moved an inch closer to the title. They remain atop the standings with 61 points.

The Flying Antelopes are three points ahead of second-placed Enyimba, who are tied on 59 points with Remo Stars in third.

With the 2023/2024 NPFL season coming to its climax, the stakes are high as title and relegation battles could go on to the final day.

Osimhen ruled out of South Africa clash

Sports Brief earlier reported that Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of Nigeria's forthcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic.

The Nigerian striker featured in Napoli's final game of the season against Lecce over the weekend but could not lead his team to victory.

The reigning CAF Player of the Year made Finidi George's final list for both games in June, but his injury problems have continued to keep him out of the national team.
